Steel bars are used as steel bars in the construction of buildings or other structures to enhance the strength of concrete. In columns and beams, steel bars must be connected or spliced together. Steel bar joints are one of the best methods for connecting steel bars. It is also known as mechanical splicing. Steel bar joint (also known as mechanical splicing) is a sturdy nut used to connect steel bars. Both ends of the steel bars have threads, and the steel bar connectors connect them together. In this case, there is no need for overlapping steel bars.

There are three methods for splicing steel bars:
1) Overlapping: Steel bars are connected by overlapping at the joint. The overlapping length is 50-70 times the diameter of the rod. The larger the pole, the greater the length of overlap.
2) Steel bar connector: a nut used to connect steel bars. Cut threads at both ends of the steel bar and connect them together using a steel bar coupler. No need for overlapping steel bars.
3) Welding: Two steel bars are connected by overlapping welding. The required overlap length is less than the overlap length. However, welding sometimes reduces the quality of the welding rod, so it is crucial to ensure that the type of welding rod is suitable for welding.
Among these three methods, the steel bar coupler is the most economical, simple, and earthquake resistant method.
According to ACI specification ACI 318-19, steel bar joints are divided into two types:
Type 1 steel bar joint:
If the ultimate strength of the joint is 25% greater than the yield strength of the rod, it is classified as Type 1. In this case, cut the thread at the end of the steel bar and connect it using a coupler. The diameter of the rod decreases at the thread, resulting in the ultimate strength of the coupler being lower than that of the rod. In the tensile test of the rod, there is a malfunction in the threaded area or at the end of the coupling. Although Type 1 couplers may be used under certain limitations, they are not recommended for constructing seismic resistant structures. For OMRF and IMRF, Type 1 steel bars can only be used to splice up to 60 levels of steel bars at designated locations in columns, beams, and shear walls.
Type 2 steel bar coupler:
If the ultimate strength of the coupler is 25% greater than the yield strength of the rod and equal to or greater than the ultimate strength of the rod, it is classified as Type 2. In this case, before cutting the thread, the diameter of the rod is increased by cold forging, and then the thread is made. The diameter of the rod will not decrease in the threaded area, resulting in the ultimate strength of the coupler being greater than that of the rod. In the tensile test, the rod far away from the coupling malfunctioned. Type 2 steel bar connectors can be used in all situations and play a crucial role in the construction of earthquake resistant buildings and structures.
According to the purpose, there are three types of steel bar joints:
Standard joint: A standard joint is used to connect two steel bars with the same diameter. In this case, the rod must be rotated and installed together with the coupling.
Reducing joint: A reducing joint is used to connect two steel bars of different diameters. The diameter of the rod in the column or pillar gradually decreases upwards. In this case, the diameter of the rod must be changed through the reducer coupling.
Position coupler: If the coupler cannot be installed by rotating the rod under any circumstances, a position coupler is required. The steel bars of cast-in-place piles should be spliced using positioning couplers.
